Munich Food Blog (Part 1)

To kick off our food blog I wanted to talk about an absolutely incredible place and somewhere I felt compelled to talk about first. Munich. I know that due to the current global Covid-19 pandemic, we can’t travel anywhere, however keep these places in mind for when we can travel again. They’re certainly worth it.

I’m going to highlight the standout food and drink that we had and this will hopefully give you an idea on what to look out for if you decide to go there. How would I describe the food we had: traditional and hearty. I would say quintessential German cuisine.

Pork Schnitzel with Sautéed Rosemary Potatoes

The pork schnitzel came with sautéed rosemary potatoes, however you could ask for chips if you wanted, we had both and either are a good choice. The pork was lightly breadcrumbed and fried to perfection, the fries were normal fries, so always a safe bet. I preferred the sautéed potatoes, you can’t go wrong with rosemary and potato, some were crispy and this worked perfectly with the pork.

Pork Knuckle with a Potato Dumpling

The pork knuckle was really good, the meat was tender and succulent. The skin on the outside was occasionally crispy as well, which is always a good thing. Sometimes, unfortunately I came across a bit of gristle, which was a shame. But overall I would get this dish again. The dumpling was very dense and heavy, for me maybe too dense and clumpy, but it’s better if you have it with the gravy, but the centre piece of this dish is the knuckle.

Bavarian Roast Pan with a Potato Dumpling

This dish consisted of three different cuts of meat, and a potato dumpling all served on a sizzling hot skillet. The dumpling was the same as the one that comes with the knuckle. However this dish is all about the three meats and the meat juices/gravy at the bottom of the pan. Every time I had this, the meats were perfectly cooked. The duck was tender and rich. The two cuts of pork are once again well cooked, meaty and were super juicy. This dish, along with the pork knuckle, are great to have with bread or pretzels to dip into the remaining gravy at the end… if there’s any left that is.

The Beers

We tried some really good beers whist out in Munich. The picture on the right was an Augustiner Beer which was really smooth and easy drinking. This was the beer we tended to order as a stein, however I think you could order any of the beers in this size if you wish. The beer on the left was a beer that I originally tried in Berlin, Konig Ludwig, Weissbier. It’s much more hop tasting and bitter than the Augustiner, I really enjoy it. Similar varieties can be found in supermarkets in the UK, so give those a try and see what you think.

The ‘Hirschgarten’ beer garden is where we were able to order these great dishes and beers. The pretzels and apple strudel at the top of the post also came from Hirschgarten. I would highly recommend visiting here. It’s welcoming, relaxing and as you can see, offers some great food and drink .

In the next part of this series we are going to expand our horizons. Somewhere just south of the city. Here is a clue:
